Islamabad United didn’t start the UAE leg on a high note. They lost to Lahore Qalandars in the very first match of the 2nd half of PSL on the 9th of June. After that disappointment, United came back with a better game plan and crushed Quetta Gladiators in no time.
Toss is been a big factor throughout the PSL as the team winning the toss has won 16 times out of 18 in this year’s PSL. The same happened last night in match number 18. Islamabad United won the toss and without any doubt, they decided to field first.
Islamabad after losing the first match decided to have two changes. They brought very talented Musa Khan back in the squad along with speedster Akif Javeed. All-rounder Faheem Ashraf and leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed were rested. This means that United came up with plenty of local talent on their side.
The two openers (Colin Munro and Usman Khawaja) were the only foreign players in the squad. The fun fact is that Usman Khawaja is born in Islamabad, Pakistan. This means only Colin Munro was a foreign player but obviously as Usman plays for Australia so, he will be counted as foreign too.
Quetta Gladiators were playing their first match after the resumption of PSL 6. The quarantine factor made them wait for two days to play their first match. They came up with a very strong playing XI. Faf du Plessis, Andre Russel, Jack Weatherald, and Jack Wildermuth were the four foreign players for them.
Having plenty much power hitting in-depth made Quetta really strong. Muhammad Nawaz, Azam Khan, and Andre Russell were supposed to kick things off in the middle order as power hitters but nothing happened this simple.
Struggling Start For Quetta
Local talent Usman Khan came to open the innings along with South African sensation Faf Du Plessis. Hassan Ali bowled the very first over against them. Muhammad Wasim, the emerging gun, bowled the second over. Faf Du Plessis struggled a lot against him and was unable to handle the bounce. In meantime, Wasim bowled out Faf.
Quetta somehow managed not to lose any more wicket in the powerplay. Just after the powerplay the United’s skipper, Shadab Khan, came to ball. On the fourth ball of the over, he bowled Usman Khan the local guy. Jack Weatherald remains on the crease as Sarfraz Ahmed was the new batsman who came up to bat.
Sarfraz Ahmed can’t hold his nerve and got out off Musa Khan’s ball, Rohail Nazir took a simple catch behind the stumps. This was the point when Quetta lost control of the game. They lost Weatherald in the 13th over of the game while Azam Khan was trying to set himself on the crease.
Andre Russell Got Injured
Quetta had a lot of belief in Andre Russell. As he came on to bat Shadab Khan called back Musa Khan into the attack. Musa was hit for 2 consecutive sixes by the big man Andre Russell. On the very next ball, Musa bowled the perfect bouncer that hit Russell on his helmet.
After the ball hit Andre on his helmet he fell on his knee. Physio came to check him and was fine enough to play more. But in no time Musa Khan got his wicket as Russell tried to play the big shot again but Muhammad Wasim got the catch.
In the bowling session of Quetta Gladiators Andre Russell was replaced by Naseem Shah.
Azam Khan’s Struggle
Azam Khan, who recently got selected for the Pakistan team, came to bat in a very tense situation. He took his time and stayed on the crease. He smashed Shadab Khan for a big six over long-on. He was staying on the crease as the game plan was to accelerate the innings till the last over.
Not a single player gave Azam company and in meantime, he lost his wicket as well. That was the end of Quetta’s batting order and the tail started. After Azam khan’s wicket, Quetta managed to score only 13 more runs.
Quetta Felt Short Of Average Score
The average score at Abu Dhabi so far, its been 163 @ 8.15. Quetta felt 30 runs short of it and managed to score only 133. This target was obviously not enough to be defended but Quetta was having a benefit as they replaced Andre Russell with a proper bowler, Naseem Shah.
Blistering Start From United
Sarfraz knew that they haven’t gathered much runs but he was not even thinking of what is going to happen now. Colin Munro and Usman Khawaja came up to bat for Islamabad. The replaced Naseem Shah was supposed to ball the very first over and he did ball.
The target was very straight forward but no one was expecting was Munro is going to do now. He smashed Naseem Shah for 19 runs in the very first over. The stage was now set for Islamabad now. Sarfraz tried all of his available bowlers but none of them worked.
Muhammad Nawaz was the best bowler among all as he conceded 18 runs in his 2 overs @ 9.00 per over. Zahid Mehmood was the most expensive after conceding 38 runs in just 2 overs @ 18.00 per over.
Islamabad Broke The Records
Islamabad United wrote their name in the record list as they score 97 runs in the powerplay. Colin Munro was the star of the match after his 90 not out of just 36 balls. Munro completed his 50 runs in just 20 balls. Usman Khawaja gave him the company with his 40 not out of 27 balls. Colin Munro’s strike rate was 250.00 as he made an unbreakable partnership of 137 along with Khawaja.
They chase the target in 10 overs only. This is the very first time in the history of PSL that a target is chased in 10 overs only.
Changes In Points Table
After winning the match one-sided Islamabad replaced Karachi Kings in the second position while Quetta stayed at the last. Winning the match within the first 10 overs impacted the Net Run Rate badly for Quetta. Along with this loss, Quetta’s chance of qualifying are nearly came to end.
