A Statistical Look At Multan Suntans Road To Victory

July 1, 2021 by Muhammad Amaan

HBL PSL 6 has given us a lot of memories, from Hassan Ali’s humor to Shahnawaz Dahani’s Celebration. We will be discussing those memories along with the statistical overview of PSL 6. It’s been an impressive journey for all of us. A lot of hurdles came but were well managed by PCB in the end.

Multan-Sultan-champion-shot-with-fireworks

Appreciation goes to the management and the staff for working days and nights to overcome all the bad aspects that were coming in the way. Also, credit goes to Muhammad Rizwan and company for their brilliant efforts to turn the game after being last in the points table to the champions.

Let’s discuss all the aspects and get to know that how Multan Sultan managed to become HBL PSL 6 champion after having the worst start to their campaign.

Multan Sultans Are PSL 6 Champions

After struggling in the Karachi leg of the tournament Multan Sultans came up with a strong mindset of just thrashing all the teams and qualify for the playoffs. In the league stages, Multan played a total of 10 matches out of which 5 were played in the Karachi leg and the remaining were played in the UAE leg.

Multan-Sultans-PSL-6-Champions

Multan Sultans won only 1 match in the Karachi leg of HBL PSL 6. They were at number 5 in the points table followed by Quetta Gladiators at the last. Muhammad Rizwan’s brilliant captaincy, Sohaib Maqsood’s fireworks, Dahani’s celebration, and Imran Khan’s accuracy took Multan Sultans to the playoffs of the PSL.

Multan not only qualified for the playoffs, but they also booked a second spot for them in the points table too. They faced Islamabad United in the Qualifier. Islamabad won a record of 8 games in the league stages but Sultans took them out of the game in no time to qualify for the Final.

In the Final, they faced the most successful team of the PSL history, Peshawar Zalmi. Zalmi was playing their 4th PSL final. Zazai was in hot form but Multan Sultans won the match one-sided again and won the title.

From facing only 1 ball in the whole tournament of HBL PSL 5 to the champion of HBL PSL 6, this was a big turnaround for Muhammad Rizwan. There was a time when no one was willing to take him along with them to playing XI but he proved himself at the big stage.

Most Runs In PSL 6

When we talk of scoring runs in Pakistan cricket then there is only one name that came into mind and that is Babar Azam. Babar Azam scored the most runs in PSL 6. Babar scored 554 runs with an average of 69.24 and a brilliant strike rate of 132.54.

Most runs in PSL 6 BABAR AZAM

His highest score was 90* and he was also the only one who performed well for Karachi Kings. It was often seen in this year’s PSL that whenever Babar Azam failed to score the whole team suffered a lot. Even when Babar scored in the 80s Karachi didn’t manage a strong target.

Babar Azam was followed by Muhammad Rizwan in the leading run-scorer list with 500 runs in 12 innings but both of these players were not announced as the Player of the tournament or Batsman of the tournament either. Both of these awards were won by Sohaib Maqsood.

Sohaib Maqsood scored 500 runs in his 12 innings for Multan Sultans. He has been a consistent performer for Multan Sultans in HBL PSL 6. Multan’s management promoted Sohaib Maqsood up the order to take responsibility and have some charge in his hands. He performed his duty very well.

Man of the tournament PSL 6 Sohaib Maqsood

Most Wickets In PSL 6

All of us know that Pakistan Super League always brings some great and passionate bowlers. Most of the leading bowlers of team Pakistan are PSL products including Shadab Khan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Hassan Ali, Faheem Ashraf, and more. The player with the most wickets in PSL 6 is also a such player.

Most wickets in PSL 6 Shahnawaz Dahani

The man with the most number of wickets in PSL 6 was Shahnawaz Dahani. The young sensational bowler from Larkana took 20 wickets in just 11 games. His bowling average was 17.00 and his economy was 8.42 per over. He has been impressive throughout the event.

Dahani gave crucial breakthroughs to Multan Sultans in plenty of tough situations. He got 2 four-for in PSL 6. His best bowling figures were 4 for 5. One of his four-for was against Lahore Qalandars while the other one was against Peshawar Zalmi.

Shahnawaz Dahani has got pace and accuracy which is his best point. He did not use any extra varieties just like modern bowlers. He relays and his pace and delivers for the team. He has got called in the red ball squad of the Pakistan International team. Discussions are going on to make him a part of the white-ball squad as well.

Most Sixes In PSL 6

A lot of power hitters were a part of PSL 6 including Fakhar Zaman, Asif Ali, Iftikhar Ahmed, Tim David, Sohaib Maqsood, Sherfane Rutherford, and plenty more. But the man who is on the top of this list for hitting most sixes in PSL 6 is none other than Sharjeel Khan.

Most sixes in PSL 6 Sharjeel Khan

Sharjeel Khan hit 23 sixes in 11 matches in this year’s PSL which is the most for this season. He was followed by Sohaib Maqsood with 22 sixes and Sherfane Rutherford with 21 sixes. Sharjeel also scored 338 runs in his 11 innings for Karachi Kings.

He also scored his second PSL century as well. His best in this year’s PSL was 105. His strike rate is been impressive as well. He played this season’s PSL with a brilliant strike rate of 148.24. He is also a part of Pakistan’s T20i squad right now.

Best Wicket Keeper Of PSL 6

best wicket keeper of psl 6 muhammad rizwan

The top wicket keepers for each team in this year’s PSL were Ben Dunk, Chadwick Walton, Kamran Akmal, Muhammad Akhlaq, Muhammad Rizwan, and Sarfaraz Ahmed. These wicket keepers represented Lahore Qalandars, Karachi Kings, Peshawar Zalmi, Islamabad United, Multan Sultans, and Quetta Gladiators respectively.

But the man who was announced as the best wicket-keeper of PSL 6 was Muhammad Rizwan for his brilliance behind the stumps. Rizwan dismissed a total of 19 players behind the stumps which were the most for any wicketkeeper. Rizwan didn’t only perform behind the stumps but he was good with the bat too.

Rizwan scored 500 runs in this year’s PSL which is the second most in any season of this tournament. Babar leads the table as mentioned earlier. Rizwan’s batting average was 45.45 and he is been admired for his captaincy skills as well.

Most Catches In PSL 6

Most catches in PSL 6 Iftikhar Ahmed

On one side there is a competition between players for most runs in PSL and most wickets in PSL while on the other end the competition is there for most catches as well. The player who took the most catches in PSL 6 is Iftikhar Ahmed. He took 9 catches in 12 games.

His catch-per-match ratio was 0.750 which is remarkable. Not only on the field but he also scored with the bat too. His remarkable contribution to the team took Islamabad United to the top of the table with a record of 8 wins on the league stage.

Highest Team Total In PSL 6

A lot of records were broken in this year’s PSL plenty of them were done by Islamabad United. Islamabad scored the most runs in a powerplay of a PSL match. They finished the game in just 10 overs to put a record. Also, they scored the highest team total in PSL 6.

Highest Team total in psl 6

Islamabad scored 247 runs against Peshawar Zalmi. Their run rate in that match was 12.35 in match number 26. Usman Khawaja scored a remarkable century in that match. He also became the first captain to score a century at the PSL as he was playing as a captain in that match replacing Shadab Khan.

The youngest team was at their best in this season as they top the points table with 8 victories. After being too well in the league stages Islamabad didn’t managed to continue the rhythm and lost both of their matches in playoffs and got eliminated.

Closing Words

Pakistan Super League always brings a lot of smiles and happiness along with it. We always get a lot of memories to remember too. We hope next year’s PSL brings some more smiles to us and the whole tournament to be played in Pakistan. Hope that players and all the sports in Pakistan keep growing.

Muhammad Rizwan vs Sarfaraz Ahmed: A Statistical Comparison

June 2, 2021 by Umar Faizan

The former captain for Pakistan’s national side Sarfraz Ahmed was dethroned from the captainship. He was out of Pakistan’s squad as well due to his batting performance. He was way too good in his captaincy but not in his won bating. So the management decided to give him rest. Babar Azam is performing the captain’s duty now.

Srfraz and rizwan

Sarfraz Ahmed was replaced by Muhammad Rizwan as the wicketkeeper. He scored his maiden ODI century against Australia and proved that he has got the will and power to perform the duty for Pakistan. A lot of debate was going on with Rizwan, that he is not a T20-style batsman. But Rizwan proved everyone wrong and right now he is the leading run-scorer in T20is this year.

Let us compare both of these Pakistani stars statistically.

Sarfraz Ahmed, who has won two trophies for Pakistan (ICC under 19 World Cup and ICC Champions Trophy), has much better experience than Muhammad Rizwan. Sarfaraz played his very first match for Pakistan in 2007 in the same year when the first T20 world cup was played. While Muhammad Rizwan Made his debut in 2015. This is the main difference and we have to keep this in our mind while comparing them.

Rizwan hasn’t played much cricket as compared to Sarfaraz. He struggled a lot in his early stages but then he recovered all that stuff through his hard work and passion. This is the reason why he is the current vice-captain of Pakistan’s national cricket side.

Muhammad Rizwan’s number in T20is is way better than Sarfaraz Ahmed’s as he has scored plenty of runs this year while opening for Pakistan with skipper Babar Azam. As mentioned earlier he is also on the top of the list for leading run-scorer in this year’s T20i season. Rizwan is also the top contender for the Pakistani Squad for the T20 World cup.

Sarfraz Ahmed inT20is hasn’t impressed much. He has scored only 3 half centuries after playing 58 matches that is a bit of a point of concern for his stats. He was often criticized for sending Shadab Khan over him to bat. Sarfraz still has a chance to perform in the upcoming remainder of PSL and get himself selected for the T20 world cup.

Muhammad Rizwan

Sarfaraz Ahmed and Muhammad Rizwan are leading two sides in the current season of PSL. Sarfaraz is leading Quetta Gladiators while Muhammad Rizwan is leading Multan Sultans. Rizwan was previously part of Karachi Kings but he was there only as of the bench warmer. He rarely got a chance to play for Karachi Kings. In this year’s draft, Karachi released him.

After getting released, Rizwan was picked by Multan Sultans in the silver category. Later, Multan announced him as their new captain. Shan Masood was replaced by Muhammad Rizwan as skipper.

On the other hand, Sarfaraz Ahmed is leading Quetta Gladiator through his PSL campaign and has played 3 finals as well. Quetta lost two finals, one against Islamabad United and the other against Peshawar Zalmi. While they won their third final in the fourth season of the PSL.

In the Karachi-leg of the current season of PSL both the players performed really well. Muhammad Rizwan is currently the leading run-scorer of this year’s PSL, Sarfaraz is also in the top 5.

Sarfraz Ahmed at WC19

The race is going on between both the stars to travel with team Pakistan for the upcoming T20 world cup. Muhammad Rizwan is the favorite guy to be selected right now but Sarfraz can prove himself as well by performing in the remainder of PSL. We hope both the stars will shine in the future for beloved Pakistan.

Lahore Qalandars Complete Details, Squad, Stats, Records, and more

May 31, 2021 by Muhammad Amaan

Lahore Qalandars is the Pakistan Super League’s franchise that represents the city of Lahore. Qalandars are the most unsuccessful but the fan-favorite team of the PSL.

After ending up the first four seasons at the bottom of the points table, Lahore Qalandars made a comeback in the previous season of 2020 and played the final against Karachi Kings. They are keeping the rhythm with them have won 3 matches out of 4 in this season as well.

Let’s know more about Qalandars.

Lahore Qalandars Squad For PSL 2021

Sohail Akhtar (c), Ahmed Danyal, Ben Dunk, Callum Ferguson, Dilbar Hussain, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, James Faulkner, Maaz Khan, Mohammad Faizan, Mohammad Hafeez, Rashid Khan, Salman Ali Agha, Seekuge Prasanna, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Sultan Ahmed (replaces Joe Burns), Tim David, Zaid Alam, Zeeshan Ashraf.

Lahore qalandar celebration picture

Qalandars have the most balanced side in this season of the PSL. Having Rashid khan and Shaheen Shah in their squad made them the strongest bowling side of this year’s PSL. The firepower of Australian bubble gum, Ben Dunk is also with Qalandars who is the massive hitter of the ball. In this year’s PSL draft they were unable to retain their opener, Chris Lynn so that they go for Rashid khan as their platinum pick.

Dilbar Husain, who was a part of the Qalandar development program, is also one of the finest youngsters of this season. Having different variations makes him even more difficult to play. Shakib ul Hassan from Bangladesh was recently added to the Qalandars squad but then he was dropped after Rashid ensured his complete presence.

Talking of experience, the professor of Pakistani cricket, Muhammad Hafeez is also a part of Lahore Qalandars. Pakistans one of the finest opener of the current era Fakhar Zaman is also part of Lahore qalandars for the last 5 years. Some young guys like Zeeshan Ashraf, Ahmed Danyal, and Muhammad Faizan are there too.

Lahore Qalandars Captain For PSL 2021

Sohail Akhtar

sohail akhtar

Sohail Akhtar is leading the Qalandars in this year’s PSL as well. The Qalandars management gives him the captaincy responsibility again as he took the team to the finals in the last season. He is currently the only captain from all PSL teams who haven’t made the international debut.

Sohail is not been able to prove himself with the bat in PSL so far, but he has amazed everyone with his captaincy skill. As Lahore Qalandars were finishing last from 4 consecutive seasons, Sohail took them to the finals in 2020. Sohail was also the leading run-scorer in the last season of the Abu Dhabi T10 league, and as PSL is now shifting to Abu Dhabi he will be on notice as well.

Lahore Qalandars Openers

Captain Sohail Akhtar promoted himself up the order in absence of Chris Lynn. He opens the inning with Fakhar Zaman, the aggressive left-headed batsman. Young Zeeshan Ashraf is another opening option for Lahore Qalandars. As mentioned earlier that Sohail hasn’t played any match-winning knock heroic knock so far, this is the actual point of concern for Lahore.

Zeeshan Ashraf will be good inclusion if they will look to rest Sohail in the future. But Sohail’s record in Abu Dhabi is better than any other batsman playing PSL right now. Muhammad Hafeez can also be tried as an opener as we have seen him opening the innings for team Pakistan in the past.

Lahore Qalandars all-rounders

David Wiese and Samit Patel were the main overseas all-rounder for Lahore Qalandars in the previous season but now they are unavailable for the remainder of the tournament. The recent replacement picks are either not bad too. James Faulkner, who has scored the third fastest ODI century for Australia, is now a part of the Qalandars family. Muhammad Hafeez who is one of the best spinner against the left-handed batsman is also there. He was also the leading run-scorer in T20s last year.

Rashid Khan the platinum pick of Qalandars can also bat well and hit some massive shot, and everyone already knows what magic he can do with the ball. Salman Ali Agha is also an all-rounding option being a leg-spinner and a batsman too.

Lahore Qalandars Bowling Unit For PSL 2021

lahore qalnadsrs teams

Qalandars have the most powerful bowling attack in this year’s PSL. All of their bowlers have got proper bowling skills and a name worldwide. Two of their platinum picks include Shaheen Shah Afridi and Rashid Khan that proves that Qalandars were focusing on their bowling in this season’s draft.

Along with these two, Haris Rauf and Diblar Husain are there. Haris is already a part of Pakistan’s T20i side and one of the favorite bowlers to go with Pakistan in the upcoming World Cup. Dilbar Husain with his variations is also a fine bowling choice.

Qalandars and United are the only two teams so far to play only 4 matches all other teams have played 5 matches each. The very first match after the restart of the PSL will be Lahore Qalandars vs Islamabad United, the winner of this match will be on top of the points table.

Fakhar Zaman is the 4th leading run-scorer of the PSL with 1253 after Babaz Azam, Kamran Akmal, and Shane Watson. While Sharjeel Khan is on 16th on that list after scoring 716 runs. Taking a look at the PSL batting average, we can’t find much difference there, Fakhar averages 29.13 and Sharjeel averages 27.53. Sharjeel Khan is the one who had scored the first-ever century in the PSL against Quetta Gladiator.

Sharjeel scored another century in this year’s PSL as well. Now he has 2 PSL centuries to his name. On the other hand, Fakhar is been unable to score any PSL century with the highest score of 94. Fakhar and Sharjeel have a strike rate of 139.14 and 149.37 respectively that shows that both the players are aggressive.

The big difference is between their numbers of boundaries as Fakhar has scored 129 fours in PSL while Sharjeel is been able to score only 64 fours. Talking of sixes, Sharjeel Khan leads this time with 50 sixes in just 29 games while Fakhar has smashed 49 sixes in his 44 innings. This proves that both the openers have aggressive nature.

More On Fakhar Zaman

Fakhar made his ODI debut in Champions Trophy when Pakistan team rested Ahmed Shehzad against South Africa. Fakhar played a quick innings of 31 and Pakistan won that match by DLS method. After that he Fakhar kept performing in the CT17. His 100 in the finals against India is still remembered by the nation.

In the tri-nation T20i series, he scored 91 against Australia and won another final for Pakistan. His partnership with Azhar Ali in the final of CT17 was the highest ODI opening partnership for Pakistan since 2009. Fakhar was the fastest to 1000 ODI runs. Ahead of Cricket world cup 2019, he scored 138 runs against England, which was the then highest individual ODI score for any Pakistani against England.

After his heroic knock of 193 against South Africa on 4 April 2021 followed by another century, he got nominated for ICC player of the month but the skipper Babar Azam won that award.

More On Sharjeel Khan

Sharjeel Khan made his ODI debut on 18 December 2013 against Sri Lanka. He scored 61 runs from 61 balls in that match. After that he got selected for the T20 World Cup 2016. He was the leading run-scorer for Pakistan in that tournament. On 7 September, 2016 he played a match-winning knock of 59 in just 36 balls against England while chasing 136.

In the very first season of the Pakistan Super League, he scored 299 runs that were the 3rd highest of the tournament. He also scored the first-ever century of PSL in the same season.

In February 2017, he was suspended and later banned for his part in the 2017 Pakistan Super League spot-fixing scandal. That is where the downfall of Sharjeel Khan started. He got banned for 2 and a half years and was unable to play any sort of cricket in that period. After completing this ban now he again a part of PSL. In the drafts of 2021, he got selected by Karachi Kings and has scored a hundred in this season as well.

The remainder of the PSL will decide whether Sharjeel or Fakhar will go with Pakistan in the World Cup 2021. If both the players perform well there a chance that both will travel with the team for the T20 WC21 but it is a very rare case as Muhammad Rizwan and Babar Azam are well as the openers in T20is for Pakistan. So, only one of these players will get a chance to fly with team Pakistan. We wish good luck to both of these stars of Pakistan.

May 26, 2021 by Umar Faizan

As we all know that HBL PSL was postponed back in March 2021 due to the pandemic.  Now the stage is ready again as all the teams gear up to play PSL again in Abu Dhabi. Let’s have a quick look at the PSL 2021 stats and points table so far.

Staring up with the points table.
